Contact IDs (Handle or Nic-handle) are used to fill in WHOIS information associated with domain names, but also for SSL certificates. Instead of filling in this information every time you register a domain name, or buy a certificate, you can create pre-populated contact handles that you can apply directly to your domain or certificate.
Contacts can be created for one, or all, of the following contact types:
- Owner Contact
- Administrator Contact
- Technical Contact
- Billing Contact
Creating a contact:
- To create a contact handle, go to the “Domains” tab and click “Contacts”.
- Click “Create New Contact”.
- The mandatory info required is “First Name” & “Last Name”, “Organization”, “Street”, “Zip”, “City”, “Country”, “State” & “Telephone”.
-
We also recommend adding the Company Registration Number (CRN) or equivalent in the “Commercial Register Number” section, and the VAT number in the "Company Tax Number" field.
Note: if possible and accepted by the TLD to which you want to link this contact, for the “First Name” & “Last Name” section, we recommend adding general information such as “Domain Admin”.
- Click “Create contact handle” to save your contact.
- If the email address associated with the contact is not yet verified, you will receive a verification email from noreply@emailverification.info. It is important to verify your email address to validate your contact.
Note: There are two types of contacts: individual contacts (P-handle), which specify a first and last name, and organizational contacts (O-handle), which do not.
Important: Once a contact is associated with a product (domain, certificate), it cannot be modified. To make changes, you must duplicate it using the "Copy and Edit" option, and then reassign it to the product (domain or certificate for instance).
Questions/Answers:
-
Can contacts/NIC handles be deleted?
Yes, but only if no domain or certificate is associated with them.
-
Can a contact/NIC handle be directly modified?
Yes, but only if no domain or certificate is associated with it. Otherwise, it's not possible to directly edit a contact/NIC handle; you must first clone and then edit it, or create a new one.
-
How do I edit a contact/NIC handle?
It's not possible to edit a contact/NIC handle used for one or more domains. You must create a new one, either from the existing contact by clicking "Copy and edit" to reuse the contact information, or by clicking "Create a new contact" and starting from a blank record.
-
If I create a new contact/NIC handle with the desired information, can I associate it with one or more domains?
Yes, by editing the domain to modify the desired contact(s). Some contact modifications are subject to restrictions depending on the domain's top-level domain (TLD), or to charges for modifying the primary contact.

Why do we sometimes find incorrect, outdated, and/or unused contacts/NIC handles?
It is sometimes necessary to update your contact information and the contacts associated with your domains, as well as perform regular maintenance and cleanup of your contact database. For example, after a contact change, the old contact/NIC handle is not deleted. Therefore, incorrect, outdated, and/or unused contacts/NIC handles may still exist.
