With the arrival of the new extensions, a virgin market is opening up with all the terms currently taken under the .fr or .com extensions, free under .guru, .email, .boutique, .services, .paris, etc.
Definition of a premium domain name
It is now virtually impossible to find common dictionary words available as .com and .fr domains. On the secondary market, these types of domain names are highly sought after and can fetch exorbitant prices.
This is obviously not the case for newly launched extensions, and each registry has established a list of common names with special value, which cannot be registered during the usual launch periods. These names are called "premium names".
Here are some examples:
- corse.club
- dietetics.menu
- ideas.menu
- Valentine's Day menu
- etc.
One might have thought that the registries would take advantage of this to sell their gems at very high prices, as has already been the case in the past (we remember the premium .CO sold for several thousand dollars).
Good news: they have been very reasonable, the additional cost compared to traditional domains being generally only a few tens of dollars, thus offering opportunities that we advise you not to miss.
Advantages of premium terms:
- Easily identifiable
- Describes an activity or service
- Improves SEO
- Competitive advantage
- Not necessarily expensive
With the new extensions, you add an extra descriptive level to your domain name (for example, the domain idees.menu speaks for itself).
The list of premium domains is obviously specific to each extension and each registry: thus, a premium domain in .archi is not necessarily a premium domain in .bio, or in another extension, etc. These premium domains can be registered either during the launch period, known as " Landrush ," or when registration opens to everyone, according to the rules specific to each registry and each extension.
DPML and premium
Two registries, Identity Digital (formerly Donuts) and Internet Watch Foundation's (IWF) (formerly Rightside), offer to register and block trademarks within their DPML systems across all the extensions they manage. However, DPML does not protect premium terms.
Note: If you have a short or generic brand name, or one that can have meaning in another language, your domain name will then be registrable by a third party for a few euros more than when it is open to everyone.
