How to verify that a website connection is secure

To check and ensure that the connection to a website is secure:

  1. Pay attention to the address bar or URL: check the URL and the domain name
  2. Still in the address bar, check the type of connection and/or the display of a padlock: you should see HTTPS (secure connection) or HTTP (non-secure connection) when you look at the URL in your browser. HTTPS is the secure version of HTTP. A closed padlock icon indicates that the site uses HTTPS and that your connection is secure.

To check that a website is safe and not dangerous for browsing:

  1. Verify that the connection to the site is HTTPS
  2. Check the legal notices, the identity and contact details of the publisher: everything must be clearly displayed, and the information must be valid
  3. Check the website's privacy policy: everything must be clearly displayed, especially regarding data processing (protection, collection and use)
  4. Check trust seals: you can verify a trust seal by clicking on it. A trust seal you click on will direct you to a page where you can check its authenticity to determine if it is genuine.
  5. Use the service Google Safe Browsing: you can perform a search to find out if a particular website poses a danger.
